Good dental hygiene is essential to maintaining a healthy smile. When you visit our office, our dentist and team will discuss your at-home hygiene routine with you, and may make recommendations on ways you can improve it.

Maintaining Good Oral Hygiene

As part of your oral hygiene routine, we encourage you to:

  • Brush your teeth after each meal or at least twice a day. We recommend that you use a fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled toothbrush.
  • Floss after each meal or at least once a day. The most important time to floss is before going to sleep at night.
  • Eat a balanced diet with a limited amount of sugary, sticky and acidic foods. This helps you maintain optimal oral health and prevent dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Visit our dentist at least twice each year for a routine dental cleaning and exam. Routine visits to our office allow Dr. Jessica Gorelik to detect and treat any problems at the earliest possible stage. Professional teeth cleanings, which are more thorough than normal brushing and flossing, also help prevent tooth decay, gum disease and other damaging conditions.

Additional Oral Hygiene Habits

In addition to these daily habits, it is important to replace your toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles become frayed. A worn toothbrush can be less effective at cleaning your teeth and removing plaque. Consider using an electric toothbrush for an even more thorough cleaning.

Using mouthwash as part of your routine can also enhance your oral hygiene. Look for a mouthwash that helps fight cavities, freshens breath and reduces plaque and gingivitis. Rinsing with mouthwash can reach areas that brushing and flossing might miss.

If you have unique oral health needs, such as orthodontic appliances, gum sensitivity or removable restorations such as dentures, our dentist can provide personalized advice to help you maintain excellent dental hygiene. Small adjustments to your routine can make a significant difference in protecting your smile.
